ABOUT US

The Well-Being Project, Brecon is located at St. John’s Centre in Pendre Close. This building was once a school and has a long history in Brecon. It has been open as a community centre since 2012.

Who we are

We are a community based organisation that focuses on giving community members the tools and confidence to make positive changes in their lives that impacts on their families and their community. Set up originally in 1965 and providing advocacy services, the Wellbeing Project Brecon are now taking a hands on approach to tackling social welfare issues in the Brecon area. Services are open access and inclusive to all community members promoting all inclusive and intergenerational services.

Older people

We recognise through our community work, and through the current research and evidence, that the growing population from the post war baby boom and longer life expectancies, pose some challenges to the society that we live in. “Participation in meaningful activity is one of the five determinants of health and well-being in later life”, according to the Age Concern and Mental health foundation Report – Promoting mental health and well-being in later life.

Older people have regular access to social activities and networks and have opportunities to be engaged in lifelong learning tailored to their needs, designed by them and are allowed to exercise their competence, enjoy respect and self-esteem and meet with like-minded people with similar needs. Such as IT, Financial Planning, Craft, First Aid, Welsh etc.

Older people enjoy physical, mental and emotional health and well-being with the aim of being able to live independently for longer with a better quality of life by being able to continue to work and participate in their communities through a range of volunteering opportunities. Through outreach befriending, working alongside other groups running in St Johns Family Centre, sharing skills, experience and knowledge.

Older people have access to information and advice about services and opportunities and are not disadvantaged when accessing them by bringing together relevant agencies to hold drop in clinics and advice sessions, in partnership with Citizens Advice, Benefit Agencies and other Health and Social organisations.

Combating loneliness and isolation by intergenerational activities such as weekly lunch clubs, bringing people together around the table where social attitudes can be changed, all age groups can be accepted and valued as full members of the community in their own rights as well as addressing healthy eating issues that people in the lower socio-economic groups are affected by. We will work in partnership with the local Church food bank.

the reason

To ensure that older people will have lives that have value, meaning and a purpose, no longer feel a burden to society and general well-being and quality of life is improved, living longer for better.
Food Co-op

We have a well established food cooperative open to all– to provide locally sourced fresh fruit and veg at a reasonable cost, easily accessible, high quality and seasonal combating rural poverty and the difficulties families have in affording or accessing fresh produce. The main principle behind all community run food co-ops is that by pooling their buying power and ordering food in bulk direct from suppliers, a group of people can buy good food at a more affordable price.
